The Alien Architect best known for his Michael Franti-like voice and vividly electric band has been known to strip it all down to congas, violin and saxophone on a whim. He has been known to play “beat sets,” in which he raps with a Dj and a bass player, “accoustic sets,” in which he plays guitar and raps at the same time often alongside a violinist and Philadelphia flute and sax legend Elliot Levinne, “spoken word sets,” and “hard hittin’ full band sets,” which include keys, bass, guitar, drums, and computer nic nacs.
He has performed all over his home base of Philadelphia, as well as Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and LA. He has been part of many a charity event, including Jobs With Justice and the Save Darfur Coalition. Choc full of energy and emotion, his mind-boggling, tongue-twisting wordplay combined the conceptual quality of his poems and verses leave listeners with plenty for their mind to work over long after the AA has left the stage; regardless of which Alien Architect happens to walk into the venue that evening. -mic stew

Interview with Alien Architect,
by Justine Wan.
What's your name?
The mild mannered Devin Asher Shlomo Cohen, AKA The ALien ArchiTect/obsurdist wordist.
Where are you from?
Center city, Philly!
When did you start playing music?
When I was a young lad, like 11 I think. I took piano lessons and a lil bit of violin. I really emerged a bit more into the vibe that would take me more to where I am now, when I was 14. During that time, I banged on my new drum set randomly in my basement and tried really really hard to write lyrics. I wasn't very good tho at either. BUt I thought it felt good to play and get into it. I wanted to be able to take this awful sound that felt so good for me to do, and learn how to share it with others (i.e. make it sound good). so I kept on truckin...and..well..Here I am now!
Why did you start?
for no reason other than instinct or just fun. it felt good. I was always an artsy fartsy bad dancing shy kinda guy. WHen I was lil, I went to mural art summer camps. Later, I went to the High School for the Creative and Performing Arts for visual arts. And so music and poetry were right up my alley. I was home-schooled until 7th grade, went through some "personal stuff," including my dad having multiple sclerosis and other things that I will keep secret for NOW. I plan on letting the cat outta the bag eventually. its foreshadowed in a lot of my songs. BUt, music and art in general was a good way to channel my experience. Plus my mom and other elements of my environment ere encouraging.
How long have you been playing?
i'm 22 now... I said 11 for when I started... so 11 years ago I guess. BUt. come to think of it, I was tickling the piano keys and playfully singing for longer than I can remember.
Where do you find inspriration for your music?
I have an enormous list really, but, to name a few; jimi hendrix, bob dylan, the beatles, k-os, saul williams, the gift of gab, bob marley, AND, in my "personal" life: psychology, loved ones and hated ones.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully happy, making music that I like and that other people like. Touring around, releasing cd's. Getting better and better at what I do. Having the freedoms and tools that I need to accomplish all of this. For example, I wanna play multiple instrument both in my albums and on stage. I also want to be allowed to really confess and "come out" of my shell, transcend if you will. I also have this kinda childish narcissistic egotistical dream of, more or less, saving the world at least a little bit with my music.
10 years?
hopefully more and more of the same. OR, Although I'm trying to be optimistic, there's a chance that I'll fail at my dreams and be a therapist of some kind. That's what I go to Temple for; Psychology!
Is there anywhere you play often, so people can come see you? I play at a lot of places, all over Philly mostly. I've been known to play @ the fire, the rotunda, the tritone, etc. BUt really, everyone should check out my myspace page for info on upcoming shows.
